WEEK ONE JUNE 20 - JUNE 26, 2010

Week One Fiction with
Tayari Jones
Writers exchange up to 20 pages
of fiction, either short story or
excerpts from a longer piece.
Elements of the work are
discussed as well as the political
and social significance in the
world.

  Week One Poetry with
Lorna Dee Cervantes

Poets from several traditions
generate new writing, exchange
work, and look at poetry as a literary
and popular form.
 

Week One Advanced Fiction with
Mat Johnson

This advanced workshop is designed
for VONA Alum who have completed at
least one full week of the VOICES
workshop prior to the 2010 session.

   
 
Week One Advanced Poetry with
Suheir Hammad

This advanced workshop is designed
for VONA Alum who have completed at
least one full week of the VOICES
workshop prior to the 2010 session.
  Week One Memoir with
Elmaz Abinader

Writers share strategies
for researching and producing
emotionally true memoirs.
Writers exchange and evaluate
each others' works
  Week One Residency with
David Mura

The week is spent in conference
with a master instructor who
gives each writer individual
attention. Daily
meetings are held to discuss craft
and writing practices.
   
             

Week Two June 27 - July 3, 2010

  Week Two Building the Poetry
Collection with
WIllie Perdomo

This workshop explores the basics of
putting together a poetry collection for
publication. Poets will look at style,
coherence, and professionalism as
well as revision.
 
Week Two Political Content in Poetry,
Prose, and Memoir with
Elmaz Abinader

Writing of color affects the political landscape.
How do we write our stories, poems and memoir
with a political perspective yet transcend the
immediate political moment. We exchange our
writing and discuss our roles in the literary and
political worlds, and generate new writing.
Week Two Memoir with
Andrew Pham
